PhD students in the MCDB program at the University of Michigan receive comprehensive financial support—including stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance—through a combination of fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships, typically for up to five years. 

Who Can Apply? 

  • Applicants accepted into the MCDB PhD program 

  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents are additionally eligible for select fellowships (e.g., Rackham Merit Fellowship) 

 What Is Covered? 

  • Full tuition 

  • Stipend (monthly pay) 

  • Fees 

  • Health and dental insurance (for student, spouse, and dependents) 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Admission to the PhD program in MCDB 

  • Maintenance of good academic standing and satisfactory progress toward the PhD (e.g., timely candidacy) 

 How to Apply? 

  • Apply to the MCDB PhD program through the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) 

  • No separate application is needed for financial aid—funding is guaranteed for admitted PhD students 

  • Fellowship nominations (like Rackham Merit) are made by faculty
