The MCDB PhD program provides up to five years of full financial support, including a stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance, for students in good academic standing. Funding is typically provided through fellowships, research assistantships (GSRA), or teaching assistantships (GSI). 

Who Can Apply? 

  • Applicants to the MCDB PhD Program 

  • Must meet admission requirements for graduate study at the University of Michigan 

What Is Covered? 

  • Full stipend for living expenses 

  • Tuition and fees 

  • Health and dental insurance (for student, spouse, and dependents) 

  • Fellowship packages may include GradCare insurance and reimbursements 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Admission into the MCDB PhD Program 

  • Continued good academic standing 

  • Timely progress toward degree (including candidacy) 

  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for the Rackham Merit Fellowship 

  • All students must complete two teaching terms (GSI) before graduating 

How to Apply? 

  • Apply through the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School 

  • No separate application is required for most fellowships (students are nominated upon admission)
