Cornell University offers assistantships to full-time Ph.D. and research master’s students in four categories—Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), Graduate Assistant (GA), and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)—to support teaching, research, and academic service while providing financial aid. 

Who Can Apply? 

Full-time students enrolled in a Ph.D. or research master’s program at Cornell. 

What is Covered? 

  • Stipend 

  • Full tuition credit at the research degree rate 

  • Cornell individual student health insurance 

  • Optional stipend supplements or summer appointments (varies by department) 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a full-time Ph.D. or research master’s student 

  • Assignment is typically within the student’s major or related field 

  • International TAs from non-English-speaking countries must undergo language assessment (via Cornell's International TA Program) 

How to Apply? 

  • No separate application is required 

  • Assistantships are awarded directly by departments, graduate fields, or individual faculty/Principal Investigators (PIs)
