Graduate assistantships at Cornell are part-time academic appointments offering financial support to Ph.D. and research master’s students in exchange for teaching or research contributions that advance the university’s academic mission. 

Who Can Apply? 

Full-time Ph.D. and research master’s students at Cornell University. 

 What is Covered? 

  • A stipend (set annually by the Board of Trustees) 

  • Full tuition credit at the research degree rate 

  • Cornell individual student health insurance 

  • Potential summer funding or stipend supplements (field-dependent) 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be enrolled full-time in a research-based graduate degree (Ph.D. or research master’s) 

  • Assignment typically aligns with your major field or a closely related one 

  • International students must complete an English language assessment if assigned to a teaching role

There is no separate application. 
Assistantships are awarded directly by: 

  • Academic departments 

  • Fields of study 

  • Principal Investigators (PIs)
