Assistantship Program in Architecture - Cornell University

Assistantships are financial support arrangements for full-time Ph.D. and research master’s students, combining academic work (teaching, research, or administrative tasks) with graduate education. They include four types: Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), Graduate Assistant (GA), and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA). 

Who can apply? 

Full-time Ph.D. and research master’s students. Open to both domestic and international students (with special language requirements for TAs from non-English-speaking countries). 

What is covered? 

  • A stipend 

  • Full tuition credit at the research degree rate 

  • Cornell student health insurance 
    (Some fields may also offer summer appointments or additional stipends.) 

Eligibility criteria

  • Enrollment in a full-time Ph.D. or research master’s program 

  • For TA roles: English proficiency is required; international students must undergo a language assessment if English is not their first language 

  • Assistantships are awarded based on academic alignment and departmental needs 

How to apply? 

No separate application is required. 
Appointments are made by departments, academic fields, or principal investigators—typically in the student’s major or a closely related area.
